1.     Find a New Profile Many of the rails we see in homes are plain round dowel-types which aren’t aesthetically pleasing. However, a local millwork company can offer you a wide array of styles which are made to match the contours of your home and serve as an accent. In addition, they can be painted or stained to match the colors of your other trim for a more seamless look.

2. Create a New Kind of Handrail

Instead of relying on traditional brackets, which often fail and leave holes in your wall over time, you can create a sturdier handrail on your own. All you have to do is create a sturdy base with a 2×2” board where your handrail would go, and then screw a 2×6” board flat against the base. This will create a modern, sleek handrail that provides plenty of support. You can pre-paint the boards to give them a clean finished look.

3. Add Some Flair

If you want a project that falls somewhere between a simple repaint of the old one and building a whole new rail from scratch, you can always use a broad chair rail to accent your hand rails. Place a 4-6” wide flat board up the length of the stairwell, extending just beyond where the rail will end at top and bottom. Then reattach your rail over the new base platform and paint them all the same color. This will create a strong break in your wall which you can leave alone or you can use to make a two-tone top and bottom paint scheme. There are plenty of ways to make your handrail a part of your decor instead of a burden.
