Selecting Baseboard Moulding

Posted By Volterra May 15, 2017

Trim profiles There are many shapes and profiles of baseboard mouldings on the market. The perfect profile will be determined by the ends of the floor and the base of the wall. The most common profiles used in America include the 3 inch rounded baseboard, the flat baseboard moulding and the sculpted mid-height baseboard trim. Obviously, a more intricate pattern will cost more than a plain flat or rounded baseboard option.

Material Type

The material you opt for will dictate the final look of the finish. Your choice will be highly affected by your budget as well. One common and affordable type of moulding material used is Medium Density Fiber-board. A more durable and versatile option is hardwood moulding made of pine, alder, oak or other wood species  Hardwood. Hardwoods are the best buy because they certainly last longer, are easily stained to show natural wood grain and give the room a higher-end appearance. High Density Polyurethane foam mouldings are a good cost-friendly option for crown and other moulding types that are installed near the ceiling, as they are not the best option for high-traffic areas. Flexible polyurethane base mouldings are a perfect solution for rooms that are round or walls with curved.  Flex mouldings are available smooth (ready for paint) or with a wood grain texture that can be stained to look like natural wood.

Color

Depending on the floor and wall colors, you can choose to paint or just stain the baseboard mouldings. White is the most common color used in mouldings today but it shows dirt more than other colors as well. Choose a color that will ensure a smooth transition between the wall and the floor. For hardwood mouldings, many people choose a stain color that matches their kitchen cabinetry to draw the natural wood color through the entire house.
